St. Louis Breast Reconstruction
After you have gone through a mastectomy, the choice of whether you would like to have breast reconstruction is yours to make. Seventy-five percent of women who have mastectomies do have surgical reconstruction on one or both breasts but the choice is up to you. You will probably have a lot of questions and concerns following the mastectomy surgery and may be unsure if the procedure is right for you. Dr. Young will take as much time as necessary to answer your questions and discuss your options for breast reconstruction. Dr. Young uses several different methods to give you the shape, appearance and size you desire. He will review each of these with you during your consultation.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Young will talk to you about what you hope to accomplish with the reconstruction. He will perform a complete examination and let you know what he thinks is possible. You should plan on spending 60 to 90 minutes with the doctor during the appointment.
The breast reconstruction surgery will rebuild your breasts so that it is about the same shape and size as it was before the mastectomy. Additionally, Dr. Young can add the nipple and areola during the procedure. Breast reconstruction can usually be done at the same time as your mastectomy surgery or at a time after the surgery. Dr. Young will review these options with you during your consultation.
